Should You Stay on Campus or Rent Your Own Place?
I stayed on campus in my first year of university and moved out to rent my own place thereafter. And so my friends tend to ask which was better. Is on campus or off campus best for you?
I wouldn’t say which was better, but it all depends on the individual and what you are looking out for. Both choices do come with their pros and cons, but after living both and off campus. I have made a list of both options:
The Pros
Social Network: The university I studied in served as a good starting point to know more people from different backgrounds and cultures. It was also the place where I met my girlfriend and she was my resident assistant back then.
So if you are the kind of person that loves being around people and NEED people to be around you, then there is no better way than your school campus
My hostel comprised of 1 Malaysian, 1 African, 1 United States & 1 Australian. So it definitely opened our eyes to students from different backgrounds and the way they communicated.
Convenience: Imagine lecture starting at 8.30 in the morning & you could actually wake up at 8am and be on time for it!
Simply put, living in a hostel is extremely convenient because you are located right next to your campus
You do not need to worry of traffic, traffic jams and the long travelling time.
Simple: No security deposit, bond, utilities, hidden fees. When I lived on campus, there was only 1 upfront fee and the monthly internet fee that we had to pay.
You do not need to worry about anything else. Hassle free
Furniture & Set up: All hostels already have their own furniture and infrastructure set up. This saves you money, time and hassle from setting up your precious internet.
The Cons
Privacy: If you like privacy, this may not be the best choice because you are always surrounded by people and there are constantly student parties, events and gatherings.
Everything is about school, school and school: There was a reason why my hostel is also called the student village. Sometimes you get so caught up in your own school community that you forget there is a bigger world outside. Because of that, you do not take note of what is happening outside your community.
Space: You need to accept the fact that you will sacrifice space. I had to share the toilet with 4 other guys. So sometimes, you have to give up on certain things & not everyone is comfortable with that.
