Featured: How Did You End Up at Murdoch University

Why did you choose to study your course?

I was previously studying Biotechnology in Nanyang Polytechnic & it was the best choice to study the same course in Murdoch University, Perth because it was the fastest and hence the cheapest way to complete my degree. The time taken for complete my degree was 1 year.

The University of Sydney

Why you chose that University?

There were basically 2 reasons which made me choose the university.  Firstly, the lecturers from Murdoch University came down to our polytechnic to share about the university, degree & culture. This made me more comfortable when it came to choosing the university to study.  Secondly, it had the most accreditations or exemptions which reduced a 3 year degree to a 1 year degree course.  This was the most attractive factor.  It meant less time spent & money spent on the overseas education.

What was the biggest adjustment you had to make?

When you come straight out of army, one of the biggest adjustments I had to make is to start hitting the books and mingling with students from different cultures.

You are out of touch with studies for at least 2 years and on top of that you become used to a certain regime and group of friends back in your home country.

I remember struggling with assignments and project work in my 1st semester as I needed to learn and get up to speed with my fellow project mates who were much younger than me.

What do you like the most of your life here?

Plenty. The cheap alcohol, fine weather, the sand & the sea but also the freedom.

You learn to be independent the hard way and you also have plenty of freedom to explore and do the things you wanted to.

What are the 3 best tips you could give any student who wants to come Australia/UK/America for studies?

  1. Grades are important but they are not everything
  2. Remember you are here to enjoy and live LIFE as an international student
  3. Be curious and explore as much in an overseas country.
